Go to BLAST and type in the dinosaur sequence from question 1. Do a BLAST search (blastp) to the protein database. Report your results.
Go to BLAST and the blastp (Protein Blast) option and type a short four amino acid sequence into the box of a musician or a musical group like NEIL (for Neil Young, Sedaka, Diamond or any number of musicians with the name) or FLEA. Make sure that the letters you use are in the amino acid alphabet (see Chapter 2). Do a Blast search for the word. Report how many hits you obtain and the quality of the hits. Now type in a five-letter stretch of amino acids like ELVIS or HAYDN or SLASH. Again do a Blast search and report the number of hits and E values. Now do a six-letter name like EMINEM or HANNAH (as in Montana) and a seven-letter name like NIRVANA or an eight-letter name like NICKCAVE. Report your results. Do you have any hypothesis for explaining the distribution of your results?
